A few years ago, while living in Kentucky, it broke my heart to be away from my children and grandchildren. Fortunately, airfares were very affordable, enough to where my ex-husband and I could afford to buy me tickets back home to California for a weekend, at least twice a month. My job was also very understanding, so many times they let me leave work early on Friday in order to catch my flight on time (sure didn't take me long to rack up the frequent flier miles). Very often times, my youngest daughter and I would go karaoke, usually at the same place, and we became good friends with the 'KJ' (karaoke jockey). My husband, whom I was dating at the time, didn't karaoke, but wow, what a dancer!!!! He enjoyed Richard's music and company also. Scooter generally won't go to a concert. He doesn't like them and hates the crowds. When he was younger, he worked for a company that provided transportation to bands from the airport to their hotels, and many times he was invited to private parties in the rooms with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Lynrd Skynrd, etc. So, the first spring that I was living back home in California, my favorite, Rod Stewart was going to be in concert. Richard happens to really like Rod too, so we had Scooter's blessings to attend the concert together with my daughter and her husband at the time. Different life events, such as Scooter and I getting married, took us in a different direction away from the nightlife. Same for my daughter...divorce, new marriage, birth of a child, etc. We lost touch with Richard.
Fast forward to this past Sunday.......
My aunt (mom's sister) lost her husband almost three years ago, and became even more active in her church, as well as different activities in her community. About eight months ago, she met a very nice man at church, that was a professor at the university before he retired, and is now a coach just to stay active. A few family members had some reservations when auntie announced they were getting married, but I just figured what the heck, why waste time when you're 74 (respectively) and I think Bob is about 76 or so. They tied the knot in a private ceremony with my cousins, Bob's children, and the priest, of course. On Sunday, a reception was held to congratulate the newlyweds, and because she is so active in her community, a lot of people attended. It was definitely a full house! At one point, I spotted a guy across the room that looked familiar (you know where this is going, don't you) and I asked Scooter where we know him from. He couldn't put his finger on it either, so rather than be puzzled about it for the rest of our lives, I ventured across the room where he was now engaged in conversation with my cousin's oldest daughters (my aunt's granddaughter...confused yet?) When I got right up close and personal, I realized it was Richard!!! At this point, I'm now confused, and blurt out, "what are YOU doing at my aunt's wedding reception?" In return, he says to me, "well, if this is your aunt, then apparently, she married my dad!!" We then had the best time telling other relatives how we went to a Rod concert together four years ago, and watching the look of confusion on their faces. LOL
Neither of us would've ever guessed that five years ago, we would end up becoming cousins by marriage! We parted company agreeing that we would probably now be seeing each other again, only this time at family functions. I wonder what other surprises my aunt has up her sleeve...and doesn't even realize it! :=)
Yep. My Husband and I figured out that by marriage, somehow we are like 3rd or 4th cousins. And I think are also related to like half the folks in the community, which considering how small it is, isn't really a hare thing to accomplish through marraige here...
