It's contest time!

This past Friday, I went to our local Barnes & Noble, mostly to see what was new in the literary world. I usually always head for the "what's new" section and then scout out my favorite authors. This time, I didn't need to go far as I spotted a new book out by Alice Hoffman, one of my faves, called The Museum of Extraordinary Things. It's been many years since I've read one of her first books , which I believe was titled Turtle Moon. I don't remember much about it, but only that I really enjoyed it. For whatever reason, I didn't purchase the book, and then I heard someone talking about how their book club was going to read her newest book. It sparked renewed interest, so I went out and got it today. I'm really looking forward to settling in with a cup of tea and reading it!

For the first time in the past few days, I was finally able to sit at my wheel for a good 45 minutes and spin. My toe is beginning to heal and I can't tell you how much I have missed spinning!! I didn't take another picture because it's the same plain brown alpaca that I've been slogging my way through. I can't hardly wait to get it off my wheel and start on a braid of BFL with different colors in it!!

I guess the flip side to not being able to spin much right now, is that I'm making great strides with my knitting. Resurrecting the Ditto cardigan has been one of the best things I've done since the first of the year. I'm so happy I've decided to bring it out of hiding and finish it! It will most likely be too big, but you know what? I'm going to wear it anyway!!!

I'm almost finished with one of my brother-in-law's socks. I'm not sure why I was being such a white knuckled knitter with this pair, but once I decided to loosen up this morning, they seem to be flying off the needles now.

Remember how yesterday I posted about running out of room for my knit garments/articles, and purging the ones I no longer want or wear? I've decided to have a contest here on my blog and you could win a hand knitted item that will more than likely be an accessory piece so that size won't be an issue! All you have to do is leave me a comment about a favorite book you've ever read and why it has had a lasting impression on you. I will run this until Feb. 1st, and then I might have another one right after it...you never know!

  3. I have read many adult books, far too many to list. I have two favorites that dates way back. They are the two that I read to my children, Matthew and Monet. They are, 10 little monkeys jumping on the bed and The Berenstains B Book.
Anyone who knew my son Matthew would agree that the book fit him in energy! As a family we had special time and would read them their favorite book every night.
I will never forget Monet when she was about four years old. It was her birthday and we had tons of family to celebrate her birthday. She walked out and started reading from cover to end The Berenstains B Book. I remember some of the words, the big brown bear biking backwards. Everyone was amazed that she could read so well. She actually had memorized the entire book because we had read it to her so many times!
As my children grew older I would tell them to read to me. I would tell them I was never read to. They loved the fact that they would read to me and I was the first one who fell asleep! Little did they know that my mom never read to me but she sang to me all of the time. I truly have lasting impressions and precious memories’ to last a life time.

  4. MariJane Stahl - The Romance of Jesus is a compelling story of the life of Christ, beginning with the 12-year old in the Temple and ending with the resurrection and the ascension. Its appeal is the present-day language and modern settings. I was captured by its dramatic qualities, and was carried along from chapter to chapter, being held tense with expectancy. The events took on new meaning s the story unfolds and sweeps to a triumphant close. I'm more blessed and have a better understanding of the words now when I read the Bible.

  6. Several years ago I read a book on a plane ride back and forth across America called In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. It really opened my eyes to what the food industry has done to our food. I adopted the main premise of the book which was to Eat Food. Not too Much. Mostly Plants. It also discussed when eating packaged foods that the label should have no more than 5 ingredients and they should be real food, nothing chemically processed. The book changed my life for some time and then I went through so many changes that I forgot about the simple rules. This contest reminded me of that book and although I am back on track eating real food and getting healthier, I think it might be worth a re-read.

  7. I like all kinds of books. But I enjoy Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston books the lost. The first I ever read "Cabinet of Curiosities" was such a page turner for me & really sucked me in. That book got me back into reading more. Such mystery, suspense, & weirdness it was awesome. C. Evans

  8. Some people will hate this answer..... Twilight. I worked in a high school when the first movie was just coming out, and kids--boys and girls--who normally wouldn't be caught dead carrying around a book were not only carrying it, but were actively discussing it. I got caught up in the fever and the rest is history ;)

  9. I thought I commented, but it didn't show up - so I'll try again. Congratulations on your blog! Maybe someday I will do the same thing. I love all books written by Dean Koontz, but one book that comes to mind as an all-time-favorite is a novel called Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It's been over ten years since I first read the book and it still rings fresh in my mind. It's a mixture of time travel, history and romance. She's written a whold series of books - and one begins where the other one stops. They've recently made a cable TV series out of the first book. It's a huge book, but you're sad when you finally finish because you just want it to continue going on. I spent many nights reading until the wee hours because I didn't want to put it down!
